Ưº°¼¼¼Ç 2 Learning from Alternative Food Movements in Asia: Are there Asian Paths to Sustainable Food Systems?
* Session Organizer: Chul-Kyoo Kim(Korea University, Korea) & Mima Nishiyama(Utsunomiya University)
Over the past decade or so, securing good food has been of great interest in many societies in Asia and efforts have been made to bring about sustainable food systems. While specific activities, organizations, and scales are diverse, these efforts have seen positive results while there have been many trials and errors. The reference of Asian efforts have been Western experiences and discourses, whether it?s civic agriculture or nested market or social economy or slow food. But as we know too well, Asian societies have different distinct social, historical, and cultural context from the West. Even among Asian societies, often the diversities are more salient. This session invites papers on alternative food movements such as community supported agriculture, food coops, local food, and farmers markets in different Asian societies in order to share their experiences and learn from each other. Papers which address some of the following questions are welcomed. What are the key features and role of alternative food movement in industrializing society? In what ways, rural producers and urban consumers have been building social ties and solidarity? To what extent, the efforts in your country have been contributing in realizing food justice and food sovereignty? Who are the main actors in alternative food movement? What are the relationships among different actors (eg. NGOs, farmers, governments, consumers) of alternative food system in your country? Finally, can we say there are Asian paths to sustainable food systems which are distinct from the West?
